He Makes 2 Million $ by Running One Person Business working 6 Hours/day
This Unfair 3 Step strategy help Brett to build Designjoy and Quit 9-5
No, I am not talking about any Viral Social media hack here, This is the story of Proven system combined with skill which can help you transition your life.
Brett Williams, Founder of Designjoy , noticed something interesting one day.
He noticed, a platform called as Deign Pickle who help businesses creating graphic design but there is something which they were doing differently…
Brett has not done something new,He has done things differently.
In place of pricing products by hour or by project they priced the packages in subscription model.
So, by paying a monthly fees you will have access to their designing services for one month and this was an “Ah-Ha” Monet for Brett.
He has experience of Graphic designing so he thought of starting his business of website designing and selling subscriptions to clients .
But,
The challenge in this model is that
Clients will raise a lot of request knowing they have unlimited access
You have to be hanging in meetings to understand the request every time
In this service you are trading time for money, which is not scalable
So, how did Brett overcame this ?
Well, this is where this 3 Unfair Process comes in-
Scarcity of Request:
Brett quickly understood that we will face the challenge is to keep revising the same project again and again because clients have unlimited access to website design development .
So, he added 2 conditions :
Clients have to request for any design through a Trello board and once the design is submitted they are not allowed to change it for. 48 hours , till Brett complete this .
This helped clients to research more and come up with right design requirement that they want
This also help Brett to save time since he know all the details that he need will be there in the requirement
Client can only request for one design at a time , once the design requested is delivered they can request one more
This helped the clients to request for the designs that they really want and not everything else.
This also helped Brett because he knows at max he will be working for one client at any point of time
but, if this is the case and imagine Brett is working for 5 clients, then he has to be in meetings with them at least 3-4 hours a day which will kill his time so how did he overcame this?
Well this is where his 2nd “Scarcity of Time” comes in.
Scarcity of Time:
Because all the requests being controlled by Trello board, Brett know there is no need of any meeting.
So he took a bold step in adding a condition
There will be no meetings and all the communications has to be done in writing by the Trello request boards
Of-course some clients do not like it and they will not be a potential customer but a lot of clients like it because it also saves their time.
So, slowly Brett started working with clients who are ready to work with these conditions.
but you may be thinking why would clients hire Brett and rather not hire someone or not hire a freelancer?
That is because of below challenges on hiring a website designer
If clients hire a website designer,
It comes with a fixed cost
Clients do not know how the person will perform
If Client here a Freelance designer from Upwork/Fiverr
They are not sure if they will get design on time
They are not sure on the quality of design and reliability of the freelancer
Hiring Brett’s agency is a No brainer because they are getting a proven designer and high reliability to turn things around in 48 hours.
but the problem is, Brett was still trading his time for money- This is not scalable so the next challenge was how can he make it scalable ?
Scarcity of Scalability
To make it scalable, Brett started a new service for selling scribbles where he packaged the scribbles as a downloadable file in Gumroad .
This means Brett can generate recurring revenue from selling digital product without putting any additional service .
Take Away for You
Time is the biggest Asset, The problem with time is that we often do not value and measure how much our time cost, so it is worth judging if doing anything worth your time or not
Do not get clients, Get the right kind of clients to work with. Often it is a good question to ask whom we will “Not” work with and What we will “Not” do
Productise your services and skills - It is not possible to grow until your services do not depend on your time and you enjoy recurring revenue for a one time effort
I hope you will gain from this and I will see you next time!
